Hamlet

Hamlet is Shakespeare's longest play, and is ranked among the most powerful and influential tragedies in English literature, with a story capable of "seemingly endless retelling and adaptation by others". The play likely was one of Shakespeare's most popular works during his lifetime, and still ranks among his most performed, topping the performance list of the Royal Shakespeare Company and its predecessors in Stratford-upon-Avon since 1879. It has inspired many other writers. Summary:

Hamlet, the prince of Denmark, is a troubled young man. His father, the king. has been murdered, and his mother has married his father´s brother, Claudius, after only a few weeks.

One night, the ghost of the king appears to Hamlet and reveals that Claudius murdered him. He asks Hamlet to seek revenge, but Hamlet wants to find more proof of the murder first. To do this, he pretends to be driven mad by grief, and puts on a play for Claudius that tells the story of a murder similar to that of the king´s. It makes it very clear that the king has been murdered by his brother. When Claudius reacts nervously to the play, Hamlet is convinced he is guilty.

Hamlet goes to comfort his mother in her room, but he thinks he can hear Claudius hiding behind a curtain and stubs at him. Sadly, he has not killed Claudius. He has murdered Polonius, the father of Ophelia,a girl Hamlet once loved. The news drives Ophelia mad and she drowns herself.

These terrible events lead to more revenge and this time Polonius´son, Laertes (pronounced "Layer-tees), decides to punish Hamlet. Claudius sets up a duel between Hamlet and Laertes, but he gives Laertes a poisoned sword to make sure that Hamlet dies. Laertes fatally stabs Hamlet, but during the fight, the two men accidentally switch weapons and Hamlet also wounds Laertes with the poisoned sword.

A wounded Hamlet then manages to stab Claudius, but at that moment his mother drinks from the poisoned wine that Hamlet had prepared for Claudius. Laertes, Hamlet, his mother and Claudius all die --not really a happy ending.

Blowin´ in the wind

 Although it has been described as a protest song, it poses a series of rhetorical questions about peace, war and freedom. The refrain "The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind" has been described as "impenetrably ambiguous: either the answer is so obvious it is right in your face, or the answer is as intangible as the wind".

Like a Rolling Stone

Critics have described the track as revolutionary in its combination of different musical elements, the youthful, cynical sound of Dylan's voice, and the directness of the question "How does it feel?" "Like a Rolling Stone" transformed Dylan's image from folk singer to rock star, and is considered one of the most influential compositions in postwar popular music. Rolling Stone magazine listed the song at number one in their "500 Greatest Songs of All Time" list

Just Like a Woman

The song has been criticized for supposed misogyny in its lyrics. Alan Rinzler, in his book Bob Dylan: The Illustrated Record, describes the song as "a devastating character assassination...the most sardonic, nastiest of all Dylan's putdowns of former lovers^[ In 1971, New York Times writer Marion Meade wrote that "there's no more complete catalogue of sexist slurs," and went on to note that in the song Dylan "defines women's natural traits as greed, hypocrisy, whining and hysteria.^[ Dylan biographer Robert Shelton noted that "the title is a male platitude that justifiably angers women," although Shelton believed that "Dylan is ironically toying with that platitude."

Knockin´on Heaven´s Door

The song describes the collapse of a deputy sheriff; dying from a bullet wound, he tells his wife "Mama, take this badge off of me; I can't use it anymore."

In 1996 and with the consent of Bob Dylan, Scottish musician Ted Christopher wrote a new verse for "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" in memory of the schoolchildren and teacher killed in the Dunblane school massacre. This has been, according to some sources, one of the few times Dylan has officially authorized anybody to add or change the lyrics to one of his songs.

Forever Young, he said he wrote it

 "thinking about" one of his sons and "not wanting to be too sentimental."

Welcome again

Hello, everybody!

We are back again.

Happy Fall and good luck for this new Academic Year 2014-2015

In our first two weeks we have met each other and we have done mainly oral activities to get to know each other.

We have talked about our names, dates of birth, horoscopes, our best friend´s or member of the family´s birthday and we have also discussed and agreed in what to do when we have to face negative behaviour.

We have also stated who wants to go to extracurricular activities, such as Theatre, Music Show or a one-week trip to Ireland.

Keep in touch and be an active and productive member of our community!

Enjoy and let the others do it too.

Be respectful, tolerant and generous.
